Deeper than this
Deeper than this is a photographic and film instillation that invites you into the reflections within Gumbaynggirr and Ngambaa waterways. Like a hallowed reading of ruminations that steady the mind during reflective intervals of ambiguity, the stillness in the river’s reflection incite introspection.
The works in the exhibition Deeper than this portray ancient ancestral waterways and take in the wonderings of clandestine reflection, upon which, the unknowable can be gently pondered. The photographs entice the mind’s imaginings to interpret the works by conferring with psyche’s suggestions, like the renowned ink blots of psychoanalysis. The short films contemplate the perplexity of the senses when exposed to ethereal expanses where time dissolves. The exhibition provides a space to be immersed in the deep echo of the land. The original concept was envisaged during the quieter days of Covid, and like waterways, continues to evolve.
Artist the artist:
Emma Gentle
Presently living on Gumbaynggirr/Ngambaa Country on the East Coast of Australia, Emma is captivated by the interconnectedness of things including that which presents as contrary or irreconcilable. Emma has exhibited her sculptural and mixed media artworks in San Miguel de Allende (Mexico), West London (UK), San Cristobal de las Casas (Mexico), Mid North Coast and Sydney (Australia).
Exhibition opens 25th October 4-6pm
88 High St, Bowraville

True Story
“True story” is the result of a 2-month art residency facilitated by Gumbaynggirr artist Chris Edwads with artist with disability Edward Barnes at Phoenix School of Arts.
“True Story is about sharing stories, Ed & I slowly started developing a relationship between the artwork we were creating and our personal stories, background & experiences. When we were deciding the exhibition name, we reflected on our last months working together and Edward said no one will believe us and I said but it’s a true story! Ed said yes, true story!” Said Chris Edwards.
The exhibition will showcase a collection of large paintings on canvas. A combination of Ed’s bold, imaginative style and Chris’ contemporary work, we are in for a treat. Hope to see you all there supporting this beautiful collaboration.
This residency was possible thanks to the support of Arts Mid North Coast who selected the project as a recipient of the Country Arts Support Program.

Teapot making
Coming up in October!
Teapot making with the talented Michaela Kloeckner
2-day workshop
Materials & morning tea included
Small group/ personalised teaching
To make a tea pot is a very complex and time consuming process.
A teapot consists of the following parts:
1. Body: The form of a teapot may vary greatly according to personal preference but very often teapots are round or squatty.
The size of the teapot may be for one person or it may be big enough to serve 4 to 5 people.
When throwing a round form on the wheel one starts by throwing a cylinder first before shaping the round form. Basic throwing skills are required.
2. The spout: Spouts can also vary in shape but should complement the form of the teapot. They may be wheel thrown, slipcast or hand built. The aim of a good spout is to pour well without even leaving one drip once the tea has been poured .The ultimate test can only be performed once the teapot is glazed and gloss fired.
3. The lid: The lid should fit snuggly into the gallery and should extend into the teapot to stop it from falling out when pouring tea. A small steam hole will help with pouring.
Various types of lids are possible and it depends on the actual form of the teapot which one would suit best.
A knob or a small handle may be attached to the lid which should complement the overall form of the teapot or you may want to add a fun-touch.
4. The handle: The handle of the teapot should be strong and sturdy. It serves the purpose of pouring hot tea without scolding hands or fingers.
Handles can be made of bamboo and attached on clay lugs; they may be pulled, extruded, coiled or cut from a slab.

Creative recovery exhibition
In the wake of the devastating Black Summer bushfires of 2019/2020 that struck our picturesque Mid North Coast region, communities faced the daunting task of healing and rebuilding. Amidst the chaos and destruction, Arts Mid North Coast initiated a two year Creative Recovery program funded by the Australian and NSW Government’s Bushfire Community Recovery and Resilience Fund, Primary Health Network and FRRR (Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal).
This innovative initiative aimed to utilise the power of art and creativity to uplift spirits, foster unity, and support the healing process for those affected.
This exhibition is the culmination of the 2-year program delivered by Arts Mid North Coast and showcases some of the artworks created by communities as well as videos documenting projects from across the region.
Opening event on Saturday 9 September, 11am – will include talks from artists and researcher Dr Emma Gentle sharing outcomes from the evaluation.
